  1. Are the children and young people of Northern Ireland (NI) being used as pawns? 

    NI children and young people continue to receive significantly less towards their education than children in England, Scotland and Wales.

  2. British Council opportunity for controlled schools

    The British Council's ‘Stronger Together: Strengthening the EU-UK relationship through Youth Engagement’ project offers young people aged 15 – 30 from the UK and EU, the opportunity to connect, cooperate, influence, and implement change on issues of common interest.

  3. The High School, Ballynahinch wins Families First Award

    The High School Ballynahinch, a controlled school based in County Down wins the School of the Year at the Families First annual school awards on 20 May.

  4. Bangor Academy crowned Northern Ireland Young Enterprise Company of the Year

    Controlled school Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College’s Young Enterprise Team is celebrating as the top student company in Northern Ireland in the 2023 Young Enterprise Competition.

  5. National Young Enterprise success  is ‘Fur Real’ at Bangor Academy. 

    CSSC congratulates Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College on this additional win as one of the 547 controlled schools in Northern Ireland that CSSC supports to include nursery, primary, secondary, grammar, integrated, special & Irish-medium schools.

  6. Personal Ethos

    This theme investigates the personal ethos of the Principal or Senior Leader and their central role in establishing the ethos, strategic direction and priorities for school improvement.  Participants will self-reflect on their values, emotional intelligence and leadership styles and be encouraged to challenge themselves to develop their leadership capacity through a coaching approach.   

  7. School Ethos

    This theme assesses, explores and affirms the identity of a school through an audit of its ethos and the creation of an agreed ethos statement. Facilitated by CSSC and using the CSSC Self-Evaluative Ethos Toolkit schools can revisit their values, vision and mission and consider how to consolidate their ethos through policies and procedures.  There is the potential for schools to explore how their ethos reflects trauma sensitive approaches.

  8. Governor Ethos

    This theme recognises the vital role of Governors in defining and maintaining the ethos of the school. Participants in these modules will have opportunities to explore a range of topics related to school ethos such as school relationships, challenge, coaching approaches, Trauma Informed Practice and the impact of community.

  9. Transferor governors training session

    Joint governor training sessions with CSSC and the Transferor Representatives’ Council

    To outline the unique role of a Transferor governor, enable us to meet with Transferor Governors and find out how the Transferor Representatives’ Council (TRC) and CSSC can support them in their role.

    There will be an opportunity to meet with members of TRC and find out how TRC represents the Transferor governors at all levels in education.

  10. Improvement Ethos

    Improvement Ethos image

    This theme promotes a self-evaluative, research-informed approach to leading school improvement and considers the importance of effective teams. Strategic thinking, positive mindsets, collaborative and nurturing approaches are characteristics considered under the ethos of improvement and participants will reflect on how they contribute to fostering and developing high standards of achievement.

    CSSC works in partnership with EA, to raise standards and outcomes within the controlled sector.
