    Governor Training Session 1 - 3 October (7.00 – 8.30pm)

    Programme one will commence with reflection on the importance of ethos and how to develop a shared ethos. Guidance on how to evaluate school ethos will also be considered and links between ethos, vision, mission and values will be explored.

    The session will examine the importance of key policy documents and how they contribute towards the fostering and developing of ethos on a whole school basis.

    Governors will also consider how a school’s ethos journey can be charted, evaluated and, in some cases, challenged in controlled schools.

    To outline the unique role of a Transferor governor, enable us to meet with Transferor Governors and find out how the Transferor Representatives’ Council (TRC) and CSSC can support them in their role.

    Governor Training Session 2 – 17 October (7.00 – 8.30pm)

    Programme 2 will explore how school ethos can be embedded in all aspects of school life. Consideration will be given to the roles of key school stakeholders who lead ethos on a day to day basis along with the importance of ensuring the ethos is fully inclusive.

    The session will examine the importance of relationships and how Governors make a significant contribution through this critical element of the school ethos.

    Governors will consider how a trauma informed approach can enhance their school ethos and how adopting such approaches can support the resilience of the whole school community.  Governors will be encouraged to evaluate current support for the emotional health and wellbeing of staff and reflect on the opportunities which present to strengthen these supports and enhance school improvement efforts.

    This event will explore what challenges our children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing and consider how schools can implement preventative approaches to bullying in schools, working with pupils to support their social and emotional wellbeing. 

    Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on how a solutions focused approach to supporting positive behaviour and mental health and wellbeing in schools might be applied to their own school contexts.

  7. CSSC and Stranmillis University College collaborative event for controlled schools

    CSSC provides high quality professional support enabling controlled school leaders to raise standards & make an impact in their schools. In this collaborative event 'With us not without us' between Stranmillis University College and CSSC on 21 September attendees heard from Prof Noel Purdy, Director of Research and Scholarship and Director of CREU (the Centre for Research in Educational Underachievement) at Stranmillis University College, Belfast.

  8. Lisneal College student is winner of Workwear Challenge Competition

    Congratulations to Sophie Magee, from Lisneal College, a controlled school based in Londonderry. Sophie was the winner of a Workwear Challenge Competition that involved five schools in the north west.

  9. CCEA - public appointments competition

    More time to apply to be a Member of the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA): Extended to 26 October

    The Department of Education (DE) is working to fill vacancies on the Council of CCEA. The closing date has now been extended for applications until 4pm BST on Thursday 26 October.

     

  10. Could you be a governor in a controlled school?

    Applications are now open for those interested in becoming Governor's in controlled schools.

    The controlled sector is the largest, most diverse education sector comprising 49% of all schools across all phases: nursery, special, primary, secondary, grammar, integrated & Irish-medium schools.  Controlled schools are #OpenToAll, welcoming children and young people of all faiths and now, richly diverse and inclusive, reflective of and embedded in the communities they serve.  Governors have an important role in developing and leading ethos in controlled schools. 

    The Controlled Schools’ Support Council (CSSC) is the sectoral support body for controlled schools in Northern Ireland.  CSSC's vision is to empower controlled schools to serve their communities by enriching the lives of their children and young people.
