Glenveagh School ‘smiling success’

Glenveagh School says smiles are the best indicator of a good day. Whether it is from having fun in the playground with friends, intensive interaction with staff or an enjoyable lesson. A smile at the end of the day lets the staff know that the pupils, while learning are having fun and most importantly going home happy.

When COVID-19 led to the closure of schools for the majority of pupils and created unparalleled challenges for staff, pupils and parents, as a school Glenveagh staff worried that they would not see those smiles. How would the necessity of remote learning affect their pupils and their families? How could they even hope to simulate an ordinary school day under such tumultuous circumstances?

A glance at their inbox of the school Facebook page went a long way to quell those fears for staff. Message after message contained pictures and videos from home of pupils undertaking assigned lessons, taking part in challenges, having fun at home, learning and smiling.

From a whole school dance video to sports day at home, the pupils and their parents did what they do best and adapted to and overcame the challenges presented by the pandemic.

Glenveagh School cannot overemphasise the impact that these pupils and their families had on the staff of the School. Their determination was the fuel that drove the staff to carry on amid such uncertainty.

Of course, that uncertainty is far from over and there are a great many questions to be answered and many more challenges to face before the return to the classroom in September. However, what is certain is that as a school community and family Glenveagh School will endure. Like beautiful pupil, Casey-Marie, pictured below, the school community never lost their spirit and will continue to smile.
