CSSC welcomes progress to end school industrial action

The Controlled Schools’ Support Council (CSSC) has today, Thursday, 13 June 2019, welcomed that teaching unions and employers have reached an agreement in principle to end long-running industrial action.

Barry Mulholland, CSSC’s Chief Executive said,

“This is positive news.  Controlled school leaders have been faced with increasing challenges over the past number of years, including action short of strike within the classrooms.

“Teachers and principals have felt undervalued and there is a perception that their professional standing has been eroded.  Resources are diminishing while workloads increase.

“Given the extremely important role that teachers play in educating our children and young people to enable them to learn and reach their potential, it is only fair that they should be appropriately remunerated and their concerns over workload and inspections taken on board.

“While we wait for the full details of the settlement, CSSC, which represents 49% of Northern Ireland’s schools and have over 143,000 pupils in attendance, would hope that the additional funding required to fund the long-awaited pay increase is found.”
