CSSC was delighted to work in partnership with Stranmillis University College to welcome principals and teachers from controlled schools to an anti-bullying workshop ‘With us, not without us’.

The event was held on 13 June at the College, the workshop explored co-participatory design approaches to tackling bullying in schools. We were delighted that Dr Barbara Spears, University of South Australia, joined Dr Noel Purdy from Stranmillis University College to lead the workshop.

Dr Spears has significant knowledge of informing government policy, engaging pupil voice and encouraging pupil-led actions on the areas of cyber-bullying, sexting, mental health and well-being.

Dr Noel Purdy, who has a particular research interest in special educational needs and tackling bullying in schools, is currently the lead partner in an Erasmus+ project working with four other EU partners to address cyberbullyng in schools.

The workshop explored children’s understanding of relationships,  the difference between conflict and bullying and providing children with the right language to support their understanding of bullying. The importance of awareness raising around the definition of bullying for the whole school community was discussed and attendees were supported in considering how interventions could be mapped to the curriculum and tailored within their own context to make the content of the programme meaningful.
