Strandtown Primary School scoop Belfast Trust Best School Award

Strandtown Primary School were absolutely delighted to receive the Maritime Award for Belfast Trust Best School presented recently at The Ninth Annual Blackboard Virtual Awards 2021 organised by Aisling Events.

Strandtown Primary School

In Strandtown Primary School they have placed a priority upon the children's feeling of connectivity to their teacher, class and school. Throughout this closure, the school gave children daily sessions online with their class and teacher. One to one live sessions were provided every week for some pupils with additional educational needs or social vulnerabilities.

The classroom assistants connect every lunch time via ‘Collaborate’ with the pupils in their care. The structure this has brought to the day has been important for the children's sense of order and routine, while allowing learning to progress under the direct teaching, engagement and questioning of the teacher.

One of the most important things is the sense of connection the school has maintained at this time. It has been hard work but the teachers have enjoyed the continued relationships this has fostered and the evident benefit and joy this has brought to the children. This home learning programme has sustained itself for three months, whilst there are over 150 pupils in school every week for supervised learning.

Victoria Hutchinson, Principal, Strandtown Primary School commented,

“For the last fortnight, we have united in the common mission of getting friends and families of the school to vote for our nomination. This brought great excitement and enjoyment across the school and was something we could celebrate with our incredible pupils, hardworking staff and supportive parents.

“The awards acknowledge those going not just the extra mile but the extra 100 miles to ensure their pupils were embraced, educated and empowered throughout the pandemic.

“At this time, there are many schools going above and beyond for the pupils in their care and it was very special to have our school's endeavours acknowledged and valued by parental nominations.”
