Play in practice

Controlled nursery schools and primary schools came together on the afternoon of Wednesday 9 June to demonstrate how their settings have facilitated playful learning opportunities for their children during the current pandemic.

The event was a celebration of play with an emphasis on the outdoors as much as indoors.

Attendees were treated to presentations from:

  • Emma Corry, Principal, Ballyclare Nursery School
  • Sharon Beattie, Principal, Dromore Nursery School
  • Pam Lowry, Principal, Killylea Primary School
  • Emma Quinn, Principal, Rathcoole Primary School

and

  • A Q&A session with Julie Coert, Senior Teacher, Sperrinview Special School.

Contributions from all presenters emphasised the positive impact of playful learning on children’s literacy and numeracy skills as well as children’s physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Key messages emphasises the need for children to be allowed the freedom to play and for parents to be supported in facilitating play in the home environment. 

Tracey Woods, Schools’ Support Officer said,

“‘The event highlighted the value of play and the contribution it makes to children’s development. This showcased an excellent example of collaboration at its best with presenters sharing practical tips and ideas that can be used by other settings. I am delighted that a recording of this webinar is available for others to be able to share in this learning.”
