Killard House Special School welcomes Education Minister

Killard House Special School, Donaghadee recently welcomed Mr Peter Weir, Minister for Education and Education Authority officers from Area Planning and Management.

Minister visit Killard House School

The Senior Leadership team led a tour of the school, explaining that the school had moved from Newtownards to the Donaghadee High School site in 2009. A dramatic increase in pupil numbers means the school is currently at capacity with a current intake of over 220 pupils across an age range 3-19 years.

Mr Weir met pupils and staff from nursery, primary and post-primary classes. He witnessed the pupils engaging in fun learning activities designed to support each pupil’s barriers to learning. The school shared their collaborative approach working with the health professionals and education staff on site to support the individual needs of Killard pupils.

Mr Weir assured the Senior Leadership Team that there are upcoming plans for major works improvements for several areas identified throughout the school.

Head Boy (Henri Berry) and Head Girl (Kim Lyle) presented a thank you card and a framed art collage of pupil paintings of Donaghadee to the Education Minister.

Mrs K Yeates, Acting Principal, Killard House Special School highlighted,

“The priority of all Killard House staff is in maintaining and developing the high quality provision they have given to SEND pupils and their families for over sixty years.

“The changing profile of the complexity of the children’s needs means that staff are facing greater challenges than ever before due to limitations of the school premises and access to appropriate purpose built areas and resources.

“Killard House School motto is “Together We Can” so we very much look forward to working alongside Department of Education in improving the provision for the pupils within Killard.
