Ryan received the award for his children’s booked entitled ‘The Year the World Got Sick.’ He wrote and illustrated the book during lockdown to help explain Covid-19 for primary school pupils.

‘Healthy Harry’ and ‘Sneezy Suzie’ were characters from the book which was initially introduced to Ryan’s own class of 12 pupils with autism through recording a video reading. Ryan’s video gained recognition from parents across Northern Ireland and gained endorsement by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Ryan Wilson, Carrick Primary School shared,

“When I first set out to write, ‘The Year the World Got Sick’, I had a classroom of 12 children in Carrick Primary School, Lurgan in mind.

“Working with children allows me to see the world through their eyes and as such, recognise just how difficult the coronavirus pandemic has been for them.

The Prime Minister’s UK daily Points of Light award was first launched in April 2014.

Ryan’s upcoming book looks at issues such as wearing face masks, queuing at shops, hand sanitising, and the new school day in which children have to stay within their class bubble.
