Congratulations to Lakewood’s pupil Garden Supervisor

Lakewood School recently appointed a pupil Garden Supervisor. Candidates went through a rigorous selection process involving a formal letter of application, presentation and interview.

Lakewood School interview process

After handling all stages of the process with aplomb, ‘J’ was awarded the position. The panel were impressed with the thoroughness of his preparation, he was also able to demonstrate a significant level of previous experience.

During lockdown in May, J volunteered to look after the school’s garden. He took on the responsibility of keeping the grass mown. He did this without being asked and without expecting any payment. This is the kind of initiative and thinking of others that Lakewood School find highly impressive. This attitude ensured that J was the standout candidate.

J took up his post following a Healthy & Safety assessment that ensures J is supervised by two members of staff. J is also required to have timesheets signed off each week as he works towards gaining an ASDAN short course in Gardening and an OCN vocational studies in Horticulture.

He quickly has proven himself to be the right choice, he has already assembled a team of volunteers to assist him, compiled a work list of everything that needs to be done in the garden and rolled up his sleeves and gotten to work. The school is looking forward to seeing everything he achieves in his post!

Mr Jon Bleakney, Principal, Lakewood School, added,

J was extremely well prepared for his interview. It was evident he had spent many long hours preparing for this classroom showdown. His garden based knowledge was exceptional, as was his acquisition of practical skills which inevitably edged him over the winning line in first place! Well done J!”
