Ballyclare Secondary School Monopoly Board PE challenge!

Covid-19 led to the closure of schools and created an unprecedented and uncertain time for staff and pupils of all schools including Ballyclare Secondary School.  Principal Kathryn Bell shares one idea that the PE Department came up with to keep Key Stage 3 pupils engaged and keeping active.

Lack of face-to-face interaction with our pupils for a prolonged period has forced us to explore and instigate a range of remote teaching methods to support our learners as best we can. With this has come professional challenges that staff have worked hard to overcome with ingenuity and creativity.

Staff recognised the need to explore and utilise other strategies to encourage our pupils to continue to work hard even from home.

The Physical Education Department were conscious that many of the Key Stage 3 pupils were probably spending a lot of time in front of a screen during this time of lockdown. Mr S Crothers, a member of the Physical Education Department, came up with an idea to encourage pupils to have some fun and get active. He created the PE Department Monopoly Board.

Pupils are encouraged to use a range of household items such as toilet rolls, skipping rope and a pillow to carry out a number of physical challenges. All members of the PE Department supported the idea and their challenges are included on the board.

The plan was that the ideas on the board could be integrated into all subject work for a week. Maybe as a diary entry or logbook, pupils could design their own squares and artwork, creating tables, graphs and charts for their results.

The game also included ideas to develop numeracy and literacy skills.
