CSSC analysis of the controlled schools sector

The Controlled Schools’ Support Council (CSSC) has undertaken a baseline assessment of the controlled education sector in Northern Ireland. These figures are based on the 2016-2017 academic year.

A briefing document, the ‘Analysis of the controlled schools sector’, and associated infographics, are now available to download.

CSSC’s analysis shows that the controlled education sector is as follows.

Large

  • The largest education sector in Northern Ireland, accounting for 48% of all schools, catering for over 140,600 children.

Diverse

  • Providing education across all school types – nursery, primary, secondary, grammar and special schools.
  • The controlled sector also includes a number of integrated and Irish medium schools.

Inclusive

  • Providing education for children of all faiths and none, plus over a third of newcomer pupils in Northern Ireland.
