A Trauma-Informed Approach 2026 2027

CSSC’s Trauma‑Informed Approaches supports schools to understand the prevalence and impact of adversity and trauma on children and young people’s development and wellbeing. The workshop’s content aligns with the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland’s promotion of key trauma‑informed principles and explores how relational approaches to supporting children and young people can contribute to a positive school ethos characterised by safety and inclusion.

Participants are supported to reflect on the diverse needs of children and young people in the classroom and examine how their role and the use of playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy can create meaningful connections and support resilience.

The workshop considers the critical role of the school environment emphasising the importance of emotionally available adults in fostering a sense of safety, inclusion and support.

The module also considers how adopting a trauma-sensitive approach can enhance the resilience of those who work with our children and young people ensuring that staff feel supported in their roles.

This workshop reflects the Department of Education’s Attendance Matters strategy, which identifies strong relational practice, trauma informed approaches and a whole school commitment to nurture as key factors in improving pupil attendance.

The objectives for this module are to:

  • enhance understanding of the widespread impact of trauma and adversity, and the potential impact on the developing brain and on individuals across their lifespan.
  • understand the role of relationships in promoting resilience and recovery.
  • explore appropriate responses to children, young people and adults who may have experienced trauma and adversity.
  • recognise the role of workforce wellbeing in protecting against and responding to secondary and vicarious trauma.
